Writing Prompts

Here is a list of writing prompts and writing challenges for all ages and abilities. You can follow the order of the list, or pick them out at random.

  1. In 25 words, write about the colour of an item of clothing that you are wearing. Do this 3 times (3 different colours).

  2. You have 60 seconds to find a piece of music. Write a poem to that piece of music. It can be any type of poem and any length.

  3. Create a piece of writing with these words, “…empty, what a surprise…”. Your word limit is 200 words.

  4. Choose from either a magician, a pirate, or a gorgon. You have a maximum of 500 words to write anything you want about them. It can be an advert, a poem, a story, a news article, a diary entry, anything! You don’t need to use the full 500 words.

  5. In 250 words, write anything about an image. It can be an advert, a poem, a story, a news article, a diary entry, anything!

  6. Close your eyes and imagine you can hear footsteps approaching. What kind of footsteps are they and who do they belong to? What does the person those footsteps belong to want from you?

  7. Write 250 words about a dying fire.

  8. Write a short story that includes these three things: eyes the colour of mud, an old garbage picker, and a portal to another world.

  9. You look in the mirror one day and your reflection moves on its own. What happens next?

  10. Start your writing with the first 7 words of the next message you receive.
